The capital and largest city of Laos, is a relaxed riverside destination where traditional Lao culture blends with French colonial architecture and modern urban life. Situated along the Mekong River opposite Thailand, the city serves as the country’s political, economic and cultural centre. Unlike many other Southeast Asian capitals, Vientiane retains a relatively peaceful atmosphere, with tree-lined boulevards, Buddhist monasteries, local markets and charming riverside promenades. Visitors can experience the spiritual heart of Laos through its temples, discover the country’s history through museums and monuments, and enjoy the welcoming character of its cafés, restaurants and traditional neighbourhoods. The city also provides an excellent introduction to Lao cuisine, handicrafts and everyday life.
Vientiane is easily accessible by air, rail and road. Wattay International Airport, located a short drive from the city centre, receives domestic and international flights, including services connecting Laos with regional destinations. The Laos–China Railway connects Vientiane with Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and destinations further north, providing a convenient alternative to road travel. International visitors can also enter the city from Thailand via the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, which links Nong Khai with the Vientiane area. Within the city, taxis, tuk-tuks and local transport services make reaching major attractions straightforward. Travellers arriving by train should allow additional time for the transfer between Vientiane Railway Station, located outside the central urban area, and their accommodation.
Vientiane’s most celebrated landmark is Pha That Luang, the magnificent golden stupa regarded as a national symbol of Laos. Other essential attractions include Patuxai, the monumental Victory Gate inspired by the Arc de Triomphe; Wat Sisaket, renowned for its thousands of Buddha images; and Haw Phra Kaew, a former royal temple now serving as a museum of Buddhist art. The riverside night market offers local food, souvenirs and views across the Mekong, while the nearby COPE Visitor Centre provides valuable insight into the continuing impact of unexploded ordnance in Laos. Just outside the city, Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) features an extraordinary collection of Buddhist and Hindu-inspired sculptures. Together, these attractions make Vientiane an appealing destination for cultural discovery, history and relaxed exploration.
